Celebrating the Beauty and Vitality of Our Oceans
A Unique Interdisciplinary Experience
Sa Mesquida and Mahon, July 26-28, 2024
I met Katja Loher in 2023 through a mutual friend. We met by chance in May this year and had a nice and interesting evening together with other friends. Katja talked about her project Plankton Manifesto, which she founded in 2022 with other well-known artists and scientists. Talking to Katja you can feel the passion, creativity and expertise that goes into the project. She switches effortlessly from one language to another, engaging people and communicating.
„Communication and why it matters.
Communication is the bridge between people. When people talk about their thoughts, their feelings, their experiences, when artists show their work, they foster a deeper understanding of each other.“
So for Katja Loher, art is one thing above all else: communication. With her art and her project Plankton Manifesto she wants to do just that, create a deeper understanding and raise awareness of the importance of preserving our land and oceans. „Plankton, mostly microscopic organisms floating in the water. An essential part of our ecosystem and a staple food for many marine species.“ The Plankton Manifesto celebrates and honors the beauty and vitality of our oceans.
After living in New York for 15 years, Katja Loher has found a new home in Menorca. Menorca, a biosphere reserve recognized by the UN, is the base of Plankton Manifesto, where P.Lab was created and where research is carried out with the aim of making the beauty of plankton accessible to people.
Katja Loher is interested in the theme of nature in art. Her works are messages to people. Organic forms, moving dreams behind glass. An ode to the silent beauty of the oceans and to sensuality. For what we see, we experience. A multi-layered kaleidoscope of different forms of expression, without boundaries.
I was at Sa Mesquida for the opening and for the first time I could not only see but also feel the magical connection between this place and the project.
Plankton Manifesto is not only an enrichment for Menorca, because it creates connections that go far beyond the island. This event touched me in a very special way. Above all, the relaxed atmosphere in Sa Mesquida, the proximity to the sea, the feeling of being in the middle of a community where people laughed, ate – delicious paella – listened to music and marvelled.
The exhibitions and events at Casabeja and Fabrica Codina complement the magical opening at Sa Mesquida, and of course I also attended Marcela Frey’s yoga classes at Casabeja, art and yoga, a unique experience and a powerful connection. The classes with Marcela create moments of oneness with yourself, your surroundings and the art. After a recent yoga class at Casabeja, Katja gave our yoga group and my family a short private tour of her gallery/house. Even after looking at her work several times, I still learn something new and realise how many artists are involved in the creation of her work. At the end, Katja shows us a very large, thick book with many naturalistic scientific drawings that have inspired her latest works. We are still discussing which ones we like the most. I will definitely be coming back and I can only recommend everyone to come and visit. In any case, Casabeja and Fabrica Codina are open until the end of September.
